The Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award for Undergraduate Teaching recognizes a full-time faculty member in the College of Education & Human Development for outstanding achievement in the area of undergraduate teaching.
Selection Criteria
The Committee on Instructional Excellence will evaluate nominations on the degree to which nominees meet and exceed the following criteria for teaching activities, with emphasis on the last five years.
Teaching activities include, but are not limited to:
- Performance as reflected on student evaluations
- Innovative teaching techniques, including advances in the uses and application of learning technology in university instruction
- Course and program development
- Authorship of textbooks, software and other similar instructional materials
- Student accomplishments
- Teaching grants
- Honors or awards for teaching

The Outstanding Part-Time Instructor Teaching Award recognizes a part-time instructor who demonstrates excellence in teaching students in the College of Education & Human Development (CEHD).
Eligibility
Part-time instructors contracted to support students in any CEHD undergraduate, graduate or certification program who have taught at least two courses within the two most recent consecutive calendar years (January 2023-December 2024) are eligible for this award.
Selection Criteria
The Committee of Instructional Excellence will evaluate nominations on the degree to which nominees meet and exceed the following criteria for teaching activities, with emphasis on the last two years. Teaching activities include but are not limited to:
- Performance as reflected in student feedback
- Innovative teaching techniques, including advances in the uses and application of learning technology in university instruction
- Course and program development
- Innovative instructional materials
- Student accomplishments
- Other areas of teaching not listed above
Nomination Packet Requirements
A full-time faculty member who is familiar with the part-time instructor’s teaching should submit a nomination letter that includes:
- The nominator’s name and department
- The nominee’s name and department
- The titles and semester dates of courses the part-time instructor taught between January 2023 and December 2024 (at least two courses)
- A description of the part-time instructor’s teaching effectiveness
- A brief statement from the nominee (2-3 paragraphs) describing the hallmarks of their approach to teaching students (i.e., what the nominee is working to accomplish in the teaching-learning process)
- No more than five artifacts/demonstrations related to the part-time instructor’s outstanding performance, which could include peer observations, student feedback, photos, audio/videos, lesson plans, samples of student work, samples of feedback given to students and course syllabi
- A description of the artifacts/demonstrations submitted

The Outstanding Faculty Service to the Profession Award recognizes a full-time faculty member who fulfills in an exemplary way the college’s commitment to service and has consistently demonstrated exemplary service to their profession at a national level.
It is expected that a nominee has engaged in multiple examples of activities in which faculty use their expertise to contribute to the profession, including:
- Holding a national office in a professional organization
- Editor of a national journal
- Review of policy or grants for federal agencies
- Leading national panels, committees or commissions
Selection Criteria
The Faculty Affairs Committee will evaluate the nominations on the degree to which the nominee’s activities match the examples above or their equivalent and their sustained involvement and/or leadership working in or on behalf of their profession.

The Outstanding Faculty Service to the Community Award recognizes a full-time faculty member who fulfills in an exemplary way the college’s commitment to service and has consistently demonstrated exemplary service to the community and Georgia State University.
Some examples of activities in which faculty use their expertise to contribute to the community and campus include:
- Participating in collaborative endeavors with schools, businesses, community organizations or campus/university units around critical issues
- Extending teaching activities to the public
- Making research understandable and usable in specific applied settings
- Organizing ways for engaging students in community and school improvement
- Providing significant leadership to an aspect of the university and/or college
Selection Criteria
The Faculty Affairs Committee will evaluate the nominations on the degree to which the nominees meet the following criteria in performing service activities:
- Sustained involvement and/or leadership in working with the public, campus and/or external organizations
- Evidence of the impact on a target audience
- Evidence of the impact of service on scholarship, instruction and curriculum

The Outstanding Faculty Research Mentoring Award recognizes a full-time faculty member who fulfills in an exemplary way the college’s commitment to providing mentoring in the conduct of research to faculty colleagues and doctoral students.
Selection Criteria
A committee comprised of the department chairs and the associate dean for graduate studies and research will evaluate the nominations on the degree to which nominees meet and exceed the following criteria:
- Senior partner in a series of research activities around a critical topic
- Mentoring on advanced design and analysis for a research project
- Mentoring on applying and securing external funding from governmental, foundation and/or government sources

The Outstanding Faculty Mentoring Award recognizes a full-time faculty member who demonstrates an exceptional commitment to faculty mentoring through their work with clinical and/or tenure-track faculty in developing their career advancement efforts in the areas of teaching, service and/or research.
Selection Criteria
The Committee on Instructional Excellence will evaluate the nominations on the degree to which the nominee demonstrates exceptional commitment to faculty mentoring. The nominee should:
- Serve as a faculty mentor, in a formal or informal capacity, to early career and/or mid-career faculty over a continuous period of time
- Demonstrate evidence of the impact of their mentoring
- Demonstrate a commitment to a continuous and ongoing mentoring process

- Letter of nomination addressing how the nominee fulfills the stated criteria from department chair or program director/coordinator (up to three pages)
- Letter of support from mentee(s) outlining the scope and impact of mentorship (up to three pages)

The Outstanding Faculty Research Award recognizes a full-time faculty member in the college for outstanding achievement in the area of scholarship.
Selection Criteria
The Committee on Research and Scholarship will evaluate the nominations on the degree to which the nominees meet and exceed in the following criteria for scholarship activities with emphasis on the last three years.
Scholarship activity includes, but is not limited to:
- Evidence of high impact of research and scholarship (e.g., citations by other scholars, programmatic implementation, effect on educational policy)
- Evidence of collaborative interdisciplinary work (i.e., involvement in research collaborative or with research centers)
- Refereed and invited publications
- External funding for the support of scholarly pursuits
- Invited and contributed presentations
- Published/copyrighted software

The Innovation in International Education Faculty Award recognizes a full-time faculty member in the college for their outstanding achievement in international education.
Selection Criteria
Nominations on evidence of impact on global engagement (e.g. study abroad, research, grants, partnerships). Engagement includes but is not limited to the following outcomes:
- Created a study abroad program or partnership agreement with innovative content or structure
- Conducted international research with international colleagues
- Designed creative relationships or agreements with international partners (e.g. university, NGO, local school district or secured funding from USAID or international equivalent)
- Co-authored publications with international colleagues
- Supported the university’s efforts in target countries
Nomination Process
A committee appointed by the dean and chaired by the director of the CEHD’s Office of International Education, Catharina Chang, will review nominations and make a recommendation to the dean. Nominators should submit the following:
- Letter of nomination, addressing how the nominee fulfills the started criteria
- Nominee’s vita
- Other relevant material (i.e. copies of publications) to support the nomination

The CEHD Interdisciplinary Team Award recognizes an interdisciplinary faculty team (at least two or more) with outstanding achievements who have made a significant contribution to the university’s research, scholarship and/or teaching mission through successful interdisciplinary collaborations.
For the purposes of this award, interdisciplinary work involves teams or individuals who integrate scholarship, data, techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts and/or theories from two or more disciplines or bodies.
Eligibility
At least two of the nominees must hold the rank of assistant professor/clinical assistant professor or above and must be from different departments. This can include faculty from other Georgia State University colleges and schools, as long as at least one team member is from the CEHD. At least two of the recipients must be university employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
Selection Criteria
A recommendation for the awardee(s) will be made by a dean-appointed committee.
The interdisciplinary team will have collaborated on a project or initiative within the last 12 months, although this could be ongoing work that spans several years. Nominations should provide evidence of positive impact(s) in two or more disciplines or broad areas. The teams will be judged on their body of work since the beginning of their collaboration.
Nomination Process
Nominations for this award may be submitted by an individual, team, unit, department or college. Self-nominations are acceptable.
To nominate for this award, please submit the following:
- Interdisciplinary team member names, titles and department affiliations
- Topic or title for the work
- Timeline for the work
- Any external recognitions or funding for the work
- Regional and/or national/international impact of the team’s accomplishments
- Nominator’s name, title and department affiliation
- A statement of two (2) pages maximum describing why this team deserves the award. Cite specific examples of how the team’s interdisciplinary approach has contributed to advancement of knowledge or helped solve a problem.
- An abbreviated current curriculum vita (two-page maximum) for each of the team members highlighting any publications, external recognition and/or external funding resulting from or attributable to the team effort.
- A maximum of two support letters from individuals who are knowledgeable about the team’s work or those that have benefited from their efforts. Be sure to explain the authors’ relationship to the team or project.
